Lebanon’s police department is operating out of a building that was never designed to be a police station, and city officials say the department has long outgrown the space.
Residents will decide in November whether the city will finance a new police headquarters, which project officials say is necessary to replace a building that has become outdated, overcrowded and increasingly difficult to use.
As Lebanon grows, the department’s space and operational needs must keep up with demand. In 2023, the city hired DLZ Corporation to assess the police department. They determined a new station is necessary to keep up with increased response.
Jonathan Tallman, a public-safety design specialist with Dewberry, said the existing building falls well short of the department’s projected needs.
He said he’s worked on more than 70 police facility projects and spent about 22 years focused on public-safety design. Tallman described Lebanon’s existing station as one of the worst facilities he has encountered in terms of space allocation and condition.
