International online retailer Shein Global Holdings Ltd., which raised $1.7 billion in an initial public offering earlier this month, has completed work on a distribution center in Lebanon, growing the company’s footprint in central Indiana to more than 2.5 million square feet.
The company was set to hold a grand-opening ceremony Thursday for the new facility, which is about 1.5 miles from its sprawling existing operation in Whitestown, and is scheduled to begin operations at the new site this month.
The facility at 6299 S. County Road 475 E. spans 737,000 square feet within the Westpark Logistics Center, which is north of Whitestown Parkway and west of Interstate 65.
Representatives for Shein declined to disclose how much the company is spending to lease the facility and fill it with equipment, except to say that the amount “represents a significant investment in our Indiana operations and our continued growth in the state.”
The distribution center is expected to employ more than 200 people despite plans to integrate the latest machinery, robotics and automation into the operation to increase efficiency, Shein U.S. President George Chiao said.
“The technology is really there to support our employees and help them work more efficiently,” Chiao said, noting that the facility uses a system that brings inventory to employees rather than requiring them to retrieve items throughout the warehouse. He said company’s approach and use of certain technologies allows it to react quickly to changes in customer demand.
