Battle of the BBQ marked its 19th year, and the smokers were fired up before sunrise Saturday as barbeque teams arrived hours ahead of crowds.
The competition included several barbeque categories with teams recognized for their entries in sweet barbeque, rub and marinade, hot and spicy and brisket.
The Lebanon Fire team was named first runner-up in the sweet barbeque category while the team, Hot and Bothered, took first place.
The first runner-up in hot and spicy was Calvert Bewley and Co. and the winner of the spicy category was Whitestown Cure.
In brisket, Michael Kolanowski was first runner-up and Trashy Barbeque took first place.
This year’s overall Battle of the BBQ champion was New Hope Christian Church.
A special award was also presented this year to the DeVol family for their dedication to the event for nearly two decades.
“I have an award this year that goes to someone, and there’s many of them, and they were here from day one,” event founder Kathy Flanary said. “They either painted faces, made balloon animals, and they bought bounce houses for me … They have done so much for me over the years and I really appreciate them.”
