Ground Broken on New Fire Station

[Courtesy: The Lebanon Reporter] The west side of Lebanon is one step closer to being safer after the Lebanon Fire Department broke ground on Fire Station 213 Thursday evening.

Lebanon residents and public safety personnel gathered on the 3-acre lot across from Menards on Sam Ralston Road to celebrate years of preparation that have gone into the project.

Mayor Matt Gentry said he first spoke with Fire Chief Chuck Batts about Lebanon’s need for a fire station for that area more than 10 years ago, when Gentry was only 26.

From that point, Gentry made it a “big hairy audacious goal” to fill the gap in service. With the construction of the fire station beginning and a new baby at home, this month has had many successes for the mayor.

The new fire station will include the TAC house for training the city’s firefighters and will enhance trench and rope rescue tactical skills, according to LFD. Fire Station 213 will also house Ladder 213, reserve Ladder 210, Squad 213 and Witham Hospital/Boone County EMS Medic 213.

Batts said it’s been a long process and he recognized the due diligence and perseverance of GM Development and CORE Construction.

“With what’s happening in the west of town with LEAP (Lebanon Research and Innovation District) and other developments in our community, we were able to do this without increasing taxes,” Gentry said.

He said this station will serve the nearby communities with much better response time, which has always been hampered by the extra distance and the CSX Railroad.

“We’ll improve that response and protection and provide a good level of service,” Gentry said. “Chief Batts has always taught me it’s about the level of service and dependability, and that’s what this fire station provides for us.”
