Declan Burress didn’t leave his sister behind when Santa asked him to help Santa Claus light the downtown Lebanon Christmas tree on Saturday.
Santa arrives by parade float to Christmas on the Square every year. He used to choose a boy and girl to help him light the big Christmas tree on the east side of the Boone County Courthouse. But Declan, a second-grader, entered a coloring contest that was new this year, and his name was drawn from the entrants.
He asked if his younger sister Fallyn could help. And it was a good thing she did.
The Heart of Lebanon organizers cut all the lights, plunging the street into darkness before Declan and Santa flipped the switch to the giant tree. But the tree didn’t light up.
Unfazed, Fallyn pulled a glow stick from her pocket. “Here,” she told Santa. “This will help you see.”
But then the tree lit up, and the stocking-capped crowd cheered.
Declan said afterward that meeting Santa was his favorite part of the parade. “I got to help Santa with my glow stick,” Fallyn chimed in.
