Owen Bigler is a senior at Lebanon High School and is currently interning at the Golf of Indiana through the Work-Based Learning Program that Lebanon High School offers. In addition to owning his own lawn care business, OB Lawns, Owen truly knows how to “drive” his passion for community service. He stays involved by being a member of the varsity tennis and baseball teams and participating in organizations such as The National FFA Organization (serving as Lebanon FFA Sentinel) and Student Council.
Transcript:
Owen: My name is Owen Bigler. I am a two sport varsity athlete at Lebanon High School, I play Baseball and Tennis. I’m the Sentinel on the FFA Officer Team. I also have my own business around town called OB Lawns. It’s a lawn care business that ties into my internship at GCI- Golf Club of Indiana. I do seeding and different kinds of work around the golf course.
Owen: My family has been doing horticulture/all kinds of agriculture our whole lives. I started my business two years ago, and I really started this year. It’s a lawn care business in my little town of Lebanon and it sparked me. I actually changed my internship, I was supposed to go to be a vet tech somewhere, but I actually changed it, just to be here for turf grass management.
John: It has been a wonderful experience having Owen here interning this year. He’s a great kid, young man I should say. He has a very bright future in the turf grass management field.
Owen: The days are all different, it’s whatever my supervisor tells me. I’ve done many different things like irrigation, I’ve done seeding, with this tractor, different kinds of seeding. It’s all different, it’s whatever my supervisor tells me what to do.
Owen: Not just my business, but really working on this new internship I have, the skills I’ve learned already with the irrigation center or using the seeding- different kinds of seeding, or even just working with the new people. John, my supervisor, is super knowledgeable when it comes to all kinds of turf and grass management. He obviously has a master in it. But it will just help me. One, figure out what I want to do with my life and career. Two, learn skills that will help me further whatever career I pick.
Owen: I recommend an internship. One, because its a great opportunity to leave school, leave the so-called “jail” everyone says, but really get into the real world and see how the workforce works. I think it’s great to pick an internship you are thinking about going into your career. One, because it will be your career and help you pick your career. Two, it’s going to help you see what you will do further in your career.
