The October 2024 Stone Eater Bike Park update drives home the point that this park isn’t just for mountain biking….Stone Eater is a celebration of all things outdoors. As the park gets closer to opening to the public, horticulture experts have been exploring Stone Eater, documenting all of the different plant species that can be found throughout the park’s 110 acres.
“This place will serve so many purposes for this community,” said Lynne Lautzenhiser, Landowner Survey Committee chair for Boone County Invasives Cooperative.
“When you come here for a bike race, you’ll get the sport aspect of it. If you want to come here and just take a walk, you’ll have a wooded section, and you’ll also have an open section that is like a mini prairie,” added Lautzenhiser. “There are so many different native species that are supported here. There are birds and you will definitely hear them throughout the park.”
“We are going to work toward making this a really healthy place for wildlife, and for people to come and enjoy.”
There was one particular section of Stone Eater Bike Park that Lautzenhiser found interesting.
“This is a beautiful corner,” she said. “You’ve got a large redbud tree that will bloom a beautiful pink in spring. In front of it, in the fall, there’s golden rod, field aster, and bone set. Behind them there are black walnut trees, which are abundant on this property. These trees and these forbs provide wonderful food and cover for the wildlife and they are going to be just a beautiful display this time of year.”
“There are a lot of beautiful parks in Boone County, but right here in this area, this is going to be a gem. This is going to be a real wealth of diversity and a wonderful peaceful piece to come and enjoy nature.”
