“When I was younger I never thought of doing this with my life, and now here I am and I’m enjoying every moment of it,” said Lebanon Fire Department Intern Kailyn Spanhook.”
Kailyn Spankook has made the most of her LFD internship. She has literally jumped in with both feet, including taking a turn inside the department’s Flash Over Chamber.
“I wasn’t really that nervous,” said Spanhook. “I found it a lot more exciting than nerve-racking. The excitement overpowered my nerves.”
“It’s refreshing to see that excitement from someone that young, “said Lebanon Firefighter Samuel Kornicks. “And also from someone that wants to get into the fire service or into the medical field. Whatever she is putting in we are going to match that effort so she’s been there the whole time.”
“I didn’t really know what I was going to do, or where I was going to intern until a month or so before school,” said Spanhook. “I was kind of nervous about coming into the fire station and interning, but the guys have all been welcoming, and I’ve created a lot of good bonds and friendships with all of them. The have helped me learn a lot of things as well.”
“I wish her the best of luck,” said Kornicks. “Hopefully when there is a hiring process, she’s a little too young right now, but hopefully she does get on (with the department). I know she can reach out to any of the guys on the department, and we would definitely help her out with anything.”
“I have kind of been shy for most of my life, but during the past couple of years I’ve been like, ‘I’m just going to go do this,’ added Kailyn. I just told myself that I’m going to have fun, and say “YOLO”(You Only Live Once). “Going and learning things, and having fun and not being nervous is a big part of it.”
